Long time no post. This is just a quick note about what I am doing right now. I have almost completed three major pieces of writing: a business plan for one of the games, now called Yachego; a draft of a module for role-playing games; a major central section of a novel.
Why am I writing three things at once? Because they are my resume for the real objective, the Adventure Calendar. If I started a Kickstarter today and said, “Hey! I’m making this thing! Pledge your money!” no one would know me from a hole in the ground. But if I say, “Hey! It’s going to include a game and here’s a game I made! It’s going to include a module and here’s a module I made! It’s going to include a story and here’s a novel I wrote!” that’s a lot more convincing.
There are challenges. Concerning the business plan, I’ve never made one. I found a good template with about 15 parts of a good business plan and I find that I have to do a lot of research for each and every point. It takes a while. Concerning the module, I had to look into making it platform agnostic and I had to draw a lot of pictures because that’s a big part of it. If it tests well, I will commission a professional illustrator to do proper versions but people can’t evaluate the module without the illustrations so I made them. Concerning the novel, I set myself a large challenge for the central section of the book, a freestanding story set in a place that never was involving complex magic systems and mysteries and many characters.
Big projects have to be broken up into parts or they become unmanageable. So I research one element of the business plan, then do one illustration for the module, then write 1000 words of the novel, all in the same day. I get ideas for other projects and jot them down for later consideration. And of course I have to earn a living and raise a family and own a home and all. Working this way takes a long time.
Look for some online presence about these three projects soon. It’s an exciting time. Until then.
